Moses Lifted up the Serpent in the Wilderness

Vance Gustin

The passage in John 3:14-15 draws a powerful parallel between Moses lifting the bronze serpent in the wilderness and Jesus being lifted on the cross. Just as the Israelites received physical healing by looking at the bronze serpent in faith, humanity can receive eternal life through faith in Christ. The title 'Son of Man' identifies Jesus as both the promised Messiah and the sacrificial lamb, challenging the traditional Jewish expectation of a conquering king. This profound connection reveals God's redemptive plan, where the Messiah would first address sin through sacrifice before establishing His eternal kingdom.
