Discouragement and Despair
Discouragement and Despair
Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.
Joshua 1:6
Joshua 1:6
Going through discouragement can be a tough season for anyone. It can be a lack of confidence and cause a person to be disheartened. We can make poor decisions based off the discouragement and despair we are going through. The story of Joshua teaches us a few things about discouragement.
Joshua was challenged with discouragement as he led the people of Israel into the promised land. Joshua's discouragement is no different than what people today go through at work, home, and in our day-to-day life.

Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

There are several truths the Christian should remember from God's Word when dealing with discouragement.
You have a relationship with the Lord.
Your relationship with the Lord is just that...a relationship. You can go to God in prayer to ask for strength and healing in your despair. You can open up God's Word and hear from God what He has for you. Commune with God in your prayer and Bible reading time.
Be Strong and Courageous
It is easy to say this, but harder to do. There are many situations in my life where I talk a good game, but the moment comes and I am weak. Christians can be strong and courageous not because of anything within themselves, but the Lord who is with them. The Israelites are promised here that God will be with them. Don't just read over that, but let it sink in. The people are promised that God is with them. You can be strong and courageous because God is with you.
Obey the Lord
You are strong and courageous, but the people here are commanded to obey the law of Moses. They are to still be submitting themselves to the Word of God. He also continues to say that if you do not turn from it, they will have success. Understand this may not be worldly success, but you will be blessed. You will be prosperous. But the writer calls them to meditate on the Word day and night. They can be strong, courageous, prosperous, and have good success because they have rooted their life in the Word of God.
Root your life today in God's Word. Think about it day and night that it will affect your heart and the way you live. In a time of discouragement and despair, go back to God's Word and let that be your source of encouragement. Think about the gospel what Jesus went through that He could save you from what you could not save yourself from.
