Jun 11, 2023    Pastor Matt Keller

In our fast-paced and often demanding world, it can be challenging to cultivate a heart of gratitude. The pressures of life, the weight of our responsibilities, and the distractions around us can hinder our ability to appreciate the blessings we have been given. But as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard—a life marked by gratitude. In this sermon, we will delve into the profound message of Colossians 1:12-14 and explore how we can overcome the difficulties of cultivating gratitude in our lives.

I. Understanding the Context:

To lay a foundation for our exploration, we will briefly examine the background of the book of Colossians and its relevance to our topic. We will discuss the Apostle Paul's gratitude for the faith and love of the Colossian believers, as well as his emphasis on the preeminence of Christ in all things.

II. The Difficulty of Gratitude:

We will then address the inherent challenges we face when it comes to gratitude. Despite its undeniable importance, gratitude can be hard to embrace. We will explore some of the common barriers that hinder our thankfulness, such as comparison, discontentment, and a sense of entitlement.

III. Gratitude as a Transformative Practice:

Having recognized the obstacles, we will shift our focus to the transformative power of gratitude. Through a careful examination of Colossians 1:12-14, we will discover the reasons why gratitude is not only desirable but also essential for our spiritual growth. We will explore the profound truth that gratitude is not merely an attitude or an occasional feeling, but a deliberate practice that has the power to shape our hearts, minds, and relationships.

IV. Overcoming the Challenges:

Recognizing that gratitude can be hard, we will explore practical strategies to overcome the difficulties and develop an attitude of thanksgiving in our lives. Drawing inspiration from biblical principles and personal anecdotes, we will uncover ways to shift our perspective, cultivate mindfulness, and intentionally express gratitude to God and others.

V. The Transformative Impact of Gratitude:

In this final section, we will highlight the transformative impact of gratitude on our lives. We will explore how gratitude can enhance our relationship with God, deepen our sense of contentment, foster healthier relationships, and equip us to navigate life's challenges with greater resilience and joy.

Conclusion:

As we conclude our sermon, we will reiterate the importance of cultivating gratitude, even though it may be hard. We will remind our congregation that gratitude is not merely a social courtesy or a fleeting emotion, but a transformative practice that aligns our hearts with God's purposes. With God's help, we can overcome the barriers, embrace gratitude as a way of life, and experience the abundant blessings that flow from a heart filled with thanksgiving.
